Hundreds of people turned up to watch the brick tower block on Governors Island collapse. The building formerly housed Coast Guard families but had been vacant since 1996. The Trust for Governors Island said the building did not meet current building codes.
The controlled demolition lasted around 10 seconds and was overseen by the city Fire Department and the Department of Buildings. New York City officials say the implosion, which took place at 7.36am on Sunday was visible from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island and New Jersey.
Governors Island was open to the public as usual following the demolition.
